Kongsberg Maritime is taking a decisive step back into the upper tier of the cruise propulsion market with the expansion of its Elegance Pod range to powers of up to 22 MW. Building on a proven platform, the development represents not just an increase in size, but a strategic evolution designed to meet the demands of a new generation of large cruise vessels.
For Anton Westerlund, the company’s Vice President Product Management – Thruster Systems, the move is a natural progression rather than a departure. The Elegance Pod has already established itself as a highly efficient and flexible propulsion solution, particularly in mid-sized cruise and passenger vessels. Extending the power range allows Kongsberg Maritime to bring the same core design philosophy to the largest ships now entering the market.
“The foundation is already strong,” Anton explains. “What we are doing with Elegance Pod is scaling a platform that has demonstrated excellent hydrodynamic performance, reliability and operability, and making it relevant for the next generation of large cruise vessels.”

A new era in cruise propulsion
At its core, the Elegance Pod has been developed with a clear focus on efficiency and lifecycle performance. Hydrodynamic optimisation has been a central design driver, reducing drag and improving thrust efficiency across a wide range of operating conditions. For cruise operators, this translates directly into lower fuel consumption, reduced emissions and improved overall vessel economics.
Equally important is the emphasis on comfort. Noise and vibration levels are critical factors in passenger experience, and the Elegance Pod has been engineered to deliver smooth, quiet operation. This is particularly relevant as cruise ship designs continue to prioritise onboard experience alongside environmental performance. “Passenger comfort is not a secondary consideration, it’s a core requirement,” says Anton. “We’ve worked extensively to ensure that the propulsion system contributes positively to that experience, both in terms of noise and vibration, but also manoeuvrability.” The increase to 22 MW brings Kongsberg Maritime firmly into the segment of the world’s largest cruise ships, where propulsion systems must deliver not only power, but also precision. Manoeuvrability remains one of the defining advantages of podded propulsion, enabling vessels to operate efficiently in confined ports and sensitive environments. In this context, the Elegance Pod offers ship designers and operators a highly flexible solution. Its design supports integration with a wide range of vessel configurations, including hybrid and fully electric architectures, reflecting the broader transition underway in the cruise sector.
“The industry is evolving very quickly, particularly in terms of energy systems,” Anton adds.
“Our role is to ensure that the propulsion system is ready to support those changes, whether that involves alternative fuels, hybridisation or future energy sources.”

Crucially, the launch of the higher-powered Elegance Pod is supported by a service infrastructure that has been developed in parallel with the product itself. For cruise operators, this is a key consideration: propulsion performance must be matched by reliable, global support throughout the vessel’s lifecycle.
Kongsberg Maritime brings extensive experience in servicing large propulsion systems, including its UUC thrusters and the Mermaid pod range. This experience is directly transferable to the new Elegance Pod units, ensuring that customers benefit from established methodologies and proven service concepts from the outset.
Anton says: “We already have decades of experience with large propulsion units, both in terms of design and service. That gives our customers a very solid foundation.”
This capability is reinforced by a global network of service engineers and support hubs, strategically located to support cruise operations worldwide.
In practical terms, this includes highly specialised capabilities for thruster overhaul and exchange operations. Large pod units require precise planning, specialised tooling and experienced personnel, areas where Kongsberg Maritime has developed robust solutions, including containerised workshop concepts that can be deployed directly in dry dock environments.

“We’ve been listening closely to leading cruise operators and shipyards throughout the development process,” he continues. “That dialogue has been essential in understanding their expectations, not just in terms of performance, but across the entire lifecycle. Reliability is critical at sea, but it’s just as important during drydocking and service operations. With Elegance, we’ve focused on delivering both.”
Looking ahead, the expansion of the Elegance Pod range positions Kongsberg Maritime to play a central role in the next phase of cruise ship development. As vessels grow larger and more complex, and as environmental requirements continue to tighten, the demand for efficient, reliable and future-ready propulsion systems will only increase.
