Inside the Elegance Pod development

The extended range of Elegance Pods marks a key milestone for Kongsberg Maritime. Scaling up Elegance: Technology behind the large pod 

The extension of the Elegance Pod range to 22 MW builds on a proven design platform, but it is not simply a matter of scaling up. The development reflects a holistic optimisation of the propulsion system, where hydrodynamics, electrical systems and mechanical integration are considered together. 

The existing Elegance range already delivers strong hydrodynamic performance. For the larger unit, further refinement has been carried out to improve overall efficiency. Rather than optimising individual components, the focus is on achieving the best total system performance. 

A key element is the use of permanent magnet motor technology. This enables a highly efficient and compact motor, allowing for a reduced pod diameter. The resulting lower hydrodynamic drag contributes directly to improved vessel efficiency. At the same time, the simplified motor design removes a number of active components, enhancing reliability and reducing system complexity. 

At higher power levels, the transition to medium voltage supports efficient energy transmission. Cooling performance is maintained through a shrink-fitted motor design, enabling effective heat transfer directly to seawater and reducing onboard cooling requirements. 

The larger scale also introduces practical advantages, including internal access for inspection and maintenance. Combined with proven bearing solutions and low noise characteristics, the result is a propulsion system designed to meet the efficiency, reliability and performance expectations of the largest cruise vessels.

Returning to large cruise ships 

The world’s largest cruise vessels represent some of the most complex ships in operation today. Carrying around 6,000 passengers and several thousand crew, they operate as floating cities, with significant demands on propulsion performance, efficiency and onboard comfort. 

This is a segment where Kongsberg Maritime has not had a strong presence in recent years. Almost all large cruise vessels are built at four major European yards, where both builders and owners are experienced and highly risk-aware. 

The extension of our Elegance Pod range represents a clear step to re-establish our position in this market. The enlarged pod is specifically aligned with the technical and operational requirements of the largest cruise ships currently entering service. 

For cruise operators, their priorities are well defined. Efficiency is critical, as propulsion represents a significant proportion of a vessel’s total energy demand. At the same time, expectations for low noise and vibration continue to increase, driven by the importance of passenger comfort. 

The new Elegance Pod responds directly to these requirements. By combining permanent magnet motor technology with a modern, efficient design, it supports improved overall performance while also enabling a more integrated approach to energy use across the vessel. 

In a market where reliability and predictability are essential, the introduction of a propulsion solution tailored to these requirements, signals a clear and strategically focused return to the large cruise sector for Kongsberg Maritime.

Supporting performance around the world 

As we prepare to introduce the new generation of Kongsberg Maritime’s Elegance Pod, scaling up to 22 MW, our focus is not only on delivering cutting-edge propulsion performance, but also on ensuring we are fully equipped to support these units throughout their lifecycle. 

From a service perspective, we are building on decades of experience with large and complex propulsion systems, including our UUC thruster range and the Mermaid pod portfolio. We understand what it takes to maintain and overhaul equipment of this size in demanding operational environments, particularly within the demanding offshore and cruise segment, where reliability and predictability are critical. 

Our global service organisation is already structured to support these larger units. We have highly skilled engineers positioned worldwide, with extensive experience supporting offshore and cruise vessels in key locations. This allows us to respond quickly and efficiently wherever our customers operate. 

One of the key capabilities we bring is our proven approach to large-scale thruster overhauls and exchanges in shipyards. We have refined containerised service solutions that allow us to mobilise fully equipped workshops directly to the dry dock. These container units are positioned at both ends of the pod during overhaul operations, providing our teams with immediate access to the specialised tools and equipment required for safe and efficient work. 

This approach minimises downtime, improves execution quality, and ensures consistency across projects, regardless of location. Just as importantly, it allows us to scale our operations in line with the increasing size and complexity of modern propulsion systems.
