0413 TRZ (Tilt, Rotate, Zoom) Camera

0413 TRZ Camera

  • Enhanced high resolution mono CCD
  • Water corrected optics
  • No Pan-and-Tilt Unit required
  • Titanium housing for resistance to corrosion
  • Output options to suit different hull-penetrator configurations

The TRZ (Tilt, Rotate, Zoom) underwater camera is a low-light monochrome camera suited to submarine, manned submersible or large ROV applications where low ambient light levels require extra sensitivity.

The TRZ Camera has been designed for low-light submarine based applications such as machinery space monitoring and equipment deployment where space is at a premium.

The camera is based upon a modified enhanced monochrome CCD camera, fitted with a 6:1 zoom lens and mounted on a tilt and rotate mechanism. The lens incorporates a custom designed optical corrector optimised for operation in seawater. The camera housing features an acrylic hemispherical dome fastened to a titanium alloy body, with a purge plug on the base that permits purging with dry nitrogen prior to operation. The camera's rotating mechanism allows it to continuously rotate through 360 degrees in either direction. The tilt mechanism allows the camera to tilt from +90 degrees elevation to +5 degrees (5 degrees above horizontal) assuming the camera orientation is such that the dome port is pointing upward. Hall Effect switches mounted on one side support and magnets mounted on the tilt mechanism serve as limit switches, which prevent mechanical over-travel.

The camera optionally incorporates additional internal hardware to provide a graphic indication of the angular tilt and rotate position of the lens assembly to the user. This will be displayed as on-screen text. The camera back-end and housing include an orientation reference mark to indicate zero degrees for angular rotate.

Optical:

Lens 8-48mm f/1.0 zoom lens
Field of View (in water)

Wide: 33° (H) x 25° (V)
Telephoto: 5.7° (H) x 4.3° (V)

Focus Range (in water)

Wide: 1.0m to infinity
Telephoto: 1.6m to infinity

Tilt Range -5° to -90° elevation (as installed on the vehicle, -5° ref - the lens is aimed 5 degrees less than parallel to the ocean floor, -90° ref - the lens is aimed down at the ocean floor)
Rotate Range  Unlimited 360° continuous rotation
Port  hemispherical acrylic dome port with internal correction lens optimised for operation in seawater
Iris Control Automatic (galvo)

Video Overlay:

Video Overlay Format The Tilt and Rotate overlays shall be alphanumeric characters. The size of the characters shall be approx. 0.25" on a 9" diagonal monochrome RS170A monitor and the characters shall be white lettering
Accuracy of Display  The accuracy of the displayed lens position shall be +/- 2 degrees
Rotate Display Format Shall be displayed as RXXX, where XXX is the rotate angle in degrees (from 0 to 359 degrees) in a clockwise direction (as viewed from above, with the dome facing downwards) relative to a zero reference mark engraved on the housing. If the text controller detects an invalid reading, 'RXXX' shall be displayed
Position of Rotate Display In the lower left corner of the video image starting approx 0.5" from the left side of the image and 0.5" up from the image as viewed on a 9" diagonal monochrome RS170A monitor
Tilt Display Format  Shall be superimposed as TX, where XX is the downward tilt angle in degrees (from 5 to 90 degrees) with the dome facing downwards. I.e. Tilt Down operation causes the displayed tilt angle to increase, hence 'T90' indicates that the lens is pointing directly downwards towards the ocean floor. If the text controller detects an invalid reading, 'TXX' shall be displayed
Position of Tilt Display  In the lower left corner of the video image ending approx 0.5" from the right side of the image and 0.5" up from the image as viewed on a 9" diagonal monochrome RS170A monitor

The viewing environment in under-casing situations is often difficult due to build up of sediment and other particulate material. The best configuration is to place lights close to the areas of interest without having the bulbs in direct line of sight to the camera. The extra sensitivity of the TRZ Camera allows lower power lamps to be used than on previous generations of submarine applications. This means a lamp that will survive the transition from air to water is possible. Lamps derived from the Kongsberg Maritime Ltd Wet/Dry Lamp have been engineered for this purpose.
